Somalia welcomed back Abdullahi Jama Mohamed, a national athlete, on Wednesday, following his recent success at the African Games. Mohamed’s achievement of securing a silver medal in the 5000-meter race in Accra, Ghana, marks Somalia’s first podium finish in over three decades.

On March 22, 2024, Mohamed clinched second place in the 5000-meter race, finishing with an impressive time of 13:38.64, just fractions of a second behind Ethiopia’s Gebrhiwet Berhe, who claimed the gold.

Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Salah Jama lauded Mohamed for his remarkable commitment to his sport and country, emphasizing his perseverance as a beacon of hope for Somali youth. Mohamed’s success, despite facing challenges such as limited training facilities, resonates deeply within Somalia’s sports community.

Somalia’s sports industry has faced significant challenges following the collapse of the central government. However, Mohamed’s accomplishment serves as a testament to the resilience and potential of Somali athletes. With a rich history of athletic achievement, exemplified by past champions like Abdi Bile and Mo Farah, Mohamed’s success inspires a new generation of Somali youth to pursue excellence in sports, harnessing their innate talents and heritage.
