An explosion at a checkpoint in the capital city of Mogadishu on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left several others injured.

The incident occurred along the road leading to Dayniile district center, in the area known as Gutale. Local reports say that the explosion was targeted at a car that the security commander, Abdirahman Ali, known as “Seedi-Hume”, was traveling in, although he survived the attack.

The blast happened while Ali and his soldiers were conducting a security check operation on vehicles passing through the district.

One of those killed was a soldier and the other a civilian. The number of injured is not yet confirmed, but several are feared to have suffered injuries from the blast.

So far, there is no statement from the security officials regarding the explosion.

The attack coincides with a period of heightened insecurity in Dayniile, as the area has witnessed a surge in bombings and targeted killings in recent days. Security forces are trying to maintain a high level of security to prevent attacks by Al-Shabab group, which is facing intense military offensives from the government.
