At least five people including soldiers have been killed early Tuesday following an Al-Shabaab suicide bombing in Baardheere town in Somalia’s Gedo region.
Local media said a car filled with explosives was detonated at a guest house where regional officials were meeting.
An unspecified number of other people were also injured in the attack.
The attack comes as the Somali government and Jubaland State – where Gedo region is located – prepare for an offensive against the extremist group.
Since August last year al-Shabab has lost swathes of territory in southern and central Somalia to the Somali army and allied local militia.
In retaliation, Al-Shabaab has carried out deadly attacks in the capital Mogadishu and other parts of the country.
