The Al-Shabaab terrorist organization on Tuesday attempted a suicide car bomb attack on the outskirts of Mahas district in the Middle Shabelle region.

The attack specifically targeted a military base in the city, where President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud delivered a speech to government troops and local community fighters.

However, the attack was thwarted by Somali security forces, and there are no reports of casualties, except for the driver of the explosive-laden vehicle who perished in the incident.

Security officials had received prior information about the car bomb, which enabled them to prevent the explosion.

During his speech to the troops in Mahas, Mohamud announced that several military officers have been arrested for abandoning the frontlines and that they will face trial in a military court.

President Mohamud had been stationed in the Galmudug capital, Dhuusamareeb, for a month, focusing on mobilizing the army and local militia forces to combat Al-Shabaab.

He is now on a multi-day visit to Mahas, engaging in meetings and security discussions in this strategically significant frontline district, with the aim of rallying troops for the complete liberation of Galmudug state.
