Somali-Kenyan lawmaker Kulow Maalim dies in Nairobi

Somali-Kenyan lawmaker Kulow Maalim died in the early hours of Wednesday at the Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi where he was receiving treatment after sustaining injuries from a hit-and-run motorcycle accident along Mombasa Road on Saturday.
Maalim, who represents Banissa constituency (in Mandera county) in the parliament, was serving his second stint as MP after he was first elected to the National Assembly in 2017.
The President of Kenya William Ruto condoled Maalim’s constituents for losing their leader describing him as “a dedicated public servant and a passionate advocate for the people and interests of Mandera County as a whole”.
Many Somali-Kenyans including several MPs and leaders from Kenya’s Northeastern region were quick to express their grief.
Eldas MP Adan Keynan described his late colleague as “the epitome of an illustrious leader, a devoted public servant and an amiable figure in the community who discharged his leadership responsibilities with great honor and dexterity”.
Maalim will be buried today at 4 p.m. at the Lang’ata Muslim Cemetry, according to his family.
