Following a one-day meeting in Galkayo, Somali government ministers and local elders secured a preliminary ceasefire agreement to address the ongoing conflict between communities in Somalia’s Mudug region. This agreement aims to solidify the existing ceasefire and pave the way for a comprehensive resolution to the Mudug conflict.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, and the Minister of Transport and Aviation, Fardowso Osman Igal, represented their respective clans at the Galkayo meeting.

A statement released after the meeting underscored the urgency of an immediate ceasefire and announced a follow-up peace gathering scheduled for next week. Land disputes are at the heart of the ongoing clashes in Mudug, which have tragically resulted in multiple fatalities.

“Our hope is to restore the Mudug region, once a beacon of peace in 2020, to its former glory,” said Minister Fiqi. “We must prevent the destruction of its positive history and, with God’s help, achieve lasting peace throughout Mudug. We call upon the Mudug people to support these efforts.”

Residents of the Mudug region hope that these efforts will bear fruit and finally bring an end to the repeated clashes that have caused unnecessary deaths and instilled fear among the residents.
