Somali government forces have repulsed an Al-Shabaab attack on an army base south of the country, the VOA Somali reported on Tuesday.

“This morning the Khawarij (which means deviants and is used by government to refer to Al-Shabaab) attacked Janay Abdalle, a strategic base which was captured from them before,” Mohamud Sayid Aden, the deputy president of Jubaland State was quoted as saying by the US-based media outlet.

Aden’s comments came following reports on Tuesday that Al-Shabaab fighters overran a military base in Janay Abdalle town located around 60 kilometers from the southern port city of Kismayo region that the terrorists lost to the army in January.

“As is the hallmark for their attacks they used a series of explosives and suicide bombing, but the Somali troops defended the base,” the Jubaland State leader added.

Since last year, the Somali government has waged an “all-out” war against Al-Shabaab militants pushing the group out of swathes of territories in central and southern Somalia.

However, the group has repeatedly retaliated with major attacks including targeting the headquarters of Benadir Regional Administration.
