The Somali National Army (SNA) led an offensive on Tuesday that captured El Dheer district in Somalia’s central Galgadud region, the country’s defense minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur said in a statement.
The announcement comes less than 24 hours after government and allied militias took over the towns of Harardhere and Gal’ad located in the regions of Mudug and Galgadud respectively. The two regions make up Galmadug state.
After liberating Hirshabelle state from Al-Shabaab militants, the Somali government has set its eyes on expelling the terrorist group from all territories in Galmudug state, which is made up of Mudug and Galgadud regions.
Meanwhile, Al-Shabab terrorists carried out a suicide bomb attack on Hawadley army base in Middle Shabelle region in Hirshabelle state that killed five soldiers including a senior army commander Col. Abshir Shataqey, state-run SONNA News reported on Tuesday.
The source said government forces repulsed the attack killing 21 terrorists.
Despite its complete liberation, Hirshabelle state has been a scene of multiple suicide bombings by Al-Shabaab terrorists in recent days.
