The newly formed SSC Khatumo Administration has warned of possible attacks by Somaliland on its people and territory. In a press release issued on Tuesday, SSC-Khatumo stated that Somaliland authorities are mobilizing troops in the Sanaag region, raising concerns about a renewed conflict.

This warning follows the tragic killing of two civilians, Osman Mohamud Colgondood and Mohamed Ahmed Aden Duale, on April 28 in the Laascaanod area of the Sanaag region.

SSC-Khatumo warns that any conflict and resulting civilian casualties will be the sole responsibility of the Somaliland administration.

Furthermore, SSC-Khatumo accuses Somaliland of planning an invasion of its territories, a move it strongly opposes. The administration also maintains its right to self-defense and pledges “to respond firmly to any aggression against its territories,” according to the press statement.

In February 2023, after months of conflict in Las Anod culminating in the defeat of Somaliland forces in GojaAdde, traditional elders from Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn (SSC) announced their intention to establish an independent federal state in Somalia called SSC-Khatumo.

However, on October 19, 2023, the Federal Government of Somalia officially recognized SSC-Khatumo as an interim administration.

Tensions remain high, and there are growing concerns about a potential escalation of violence that could inflict further devastation on the civilian population. Somaliland maintains its claim to the SSC region as part of its self-declared state and reportedly seeks to take control by force. In contrast, the civilian-led SSC-Khatumo forces assert their right to self-defense.

Furthermore, SSC-Khatumo urges the international community and other relevant stakeholders to take immediate action to deter renewed tensions in the already-devastated region. The region is still recovering from months of conflict and displacement.
