At least one person was killed and more than a dozen others injured after Al-Shabaab launched multiple rocket attacks on Afgoye, a town about 30 km from Mogadishu, on Monday, local media reported.

Security sources said at least 10 shells struck a military base, injuring both civilians and security personnel. A senior police officer, Hussein Haji Mohamed, also known as Aw Kombe, was confirmed dead.

The attack coincided with a visit by Banaadir regional police chief Moalim Mahdi, who was in the area alongside other security officials to oversee operations against Al-Shabaab.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement on the incident, and the extent of the damage remains unclear. However, local reports indicate that police have launched an investigation to determine the origin of the rockets.

Earlier in the day, residents vacated Afgoye’s main market due to rising security concerns.
