Arrest of opposition leader sparks political uproar in Somalia

Somali police on Friday arrested Abdirahman Suleyman Jama, chairman of the opposition political association Shacabka, in Mogadishu’s Hamarweyne district, citing threats to national security.
In a statement issued after the arrest, the Somali Police Force accused Jama of involvement in activities that undermine national security, though no specific allegations were disclosed.
“The Hamarweyne Police Station has arrested suspect Abdirahman Suleyman Jama for engaging in acts that threaten national security,” the statement said, adding that he would be brought before a court.
Authorities also warned citizens against supporting what they described as “enemies,” promising legal action against anyone found in violation.
“The public is advised not to support the Khawarij enemy. Anyone participating in acts against national security will be held accountable under the law,” the statement said, using the term commonly employed by Somali officials to refer to the militant group Al-Shabaab.
Jama had recently criticised President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s administration over its handling of the country’s security, warning that Al-Shabaab remains a serious threat as attacks continue near key towns close to the capital, such as Bal’ad.
The arrest drew sharp criticism from leading opposition figures, including former President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, who denounced it as unlawful and politically motivated.
“The unlawful arrest of opposition leader Abdirahman Suleyman Jama by federal security forces reflects the kind of electoral process President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is preparing for and the political course he has set,” Farmaajo said in a statement.
Himilo Qaran, a political party led by former President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, also condemned the arrest, describing it as an act of political repression.
“This is a case of political abduction and a clear violation of the Somali constitution and laws. It underscores the federal government’s growing crackdown on political groups and independent media,” the party said.
The arrest comes at a time when President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has announced a national political dialogue to address key challenges, including the ongoing war against Al-Shabaab. The initiative has been welcomed by some opposition figures, though the latest incident risks deepening political tensions.
