ATMIS commences 2nd phase of troop withdrawal

The African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) has begun the second phase of its troop withdrawal, marking a critical milestone in Somalia’s journey towards self-sufficiency in security.
On Sunday, Burundian ATMIS forces handed over control of the Biyo Adaley forward operating base (FOB) to the Somali National Army (SNA). Located near the city of Jowhar in the middle Shabelle region, the FOB plays a vital role in ensuring regional security.
This development represents progress in Somalia’s efforts to stabilize the nation, protect its citizens, and establish lasting peace and stability.
Key officials from ATMIS, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), and the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOS) attended the handover ceremony.
During the ceremony, ATMIS Deputy Force Commander, commended the SNA’s achievements in enhancing the nation’s security capabilities and their efforts in repelling attacks, capturing strategic areas, and securing communities.
Army chief General Muhidin Ahmed expressed gratitude to the Burundian troops serving under ATMIS for their vital role in safeguarding the Hirshabelle State.
In addition to the base handover, UNSOS, which supports ATMIS, provided essential equipment to the SNA to facilitate the troop withdrawal. This equipment includes vehicles, water purification plants, generators, medical supplies, fuel tanks, ambulances, and waste disposal facilities.
Initially, Somalia hosted approximately 20,000 ATMIS forces. The mission’s current goal is to reduce this number by withdrawing a minimum of 3,000 more troops by the end of the month. The first phase of this troop reduction occurred in June when around 2,000 AU troops from different member states departed Somalia.
ATMIS’ mandate is set to conclude in December 2024, and both Somalia and its international partners are determined to ensure the gradual withdrawal of troops is finished by the deadline. The ultimate goal is to transfer the security responsibility of the country to the Somali Security Forces.
