ATMIS representatives meet in Uganda to evaluate mission’s performance

Officials representing countries contributing troops to the African Union (AU) peacekeeping force in Somalia (ATMIS) have met in the Ugandan capital Kampala to discuss the mission’s performance.
The meeting comes amid unverified reports suggesting that the Somali government may seek an extension for the mission whose mandate is set to end by December 2024 , according to privately-owned Hiiraan Online.
Officials from Troop Contributing Countries (TCC), the AU, and representatives from the international community have gathered in Kampala since April 24, 2023.
“The objective of the meeting is to discuss the seamless implementation of the ATMIS troop drawdown, with the initial phase involving the withdrawal of 2,000 troops from Somalia set for the end of June 2023 under revised timelines,” Hiiraan Online said.
The Somali National Army’s readiness to take over security responsibilities from ATMIS will also be evaluated during meeting, the website added.
