A suicide bomber struck a military training camp in Mogadishu on Saturday, killing at least five people and wounding 11 others, according to the state-run SONNA news agency.
Al-Shabab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it killed 100 soldiers in the attack.
The attack on the camp comes a week after twin blasts near Mogadishu’s Zobe junction left at least 120 dead.
Speaking to SONNA, Somalia’s military chief Gen. Odowa Yusuf Ragge said the attack was thwarted by the army before reaching its target.
Al-Shabaab has stepped up its terrorist attacks in Mogadishu amid an ongoing offensive led by the Somali security forces that has pushed the group out of several towns in central Somalia.
In a statement on Friday, the Somali government said the army had killed more than 100 al-Shabab fighters in an operation in central Hirshabelle state.
