The Somali National Army on Friday repulsed an attack by al-Shabab fighters on an army base in recently liberated Galcad town of central Galgadud region killing 100 al-Shabab fighters, the state-run Somali National News Agency (SONNA) said in a report.
The report added that seven Somali soldiers were also killed in the attack including deputy commander of US-trained Danab forces Major Hassan Osman Mohamed aka Hassan Tuure.
Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab spokesman Abu Musab claimed that the terrorist group killed more than 150 Somali soldiers.
Following his election in May last year, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced an “all-out war” against Al-Shabaab militants which saw the Somali army leading offensives against Al-Shabaab that have led to the liberation of vast territories from the group in south and central Somalia.
After liberating Hirshabelle state from Al-Shabaab militants, the Somali government has set its eyes on expelling the terrorist group from all territories in Galmudug state, which is made up of Mudug and Galgadud regions.
Galcad, Harardhere and El Dheer are the latest towns to be liberated in Galmudug state.
