A court in Somalia on Tuesday delivered a verdict in a case involving a group accused of human trafficking and migrant smuggling.

The Banadir Regional Court said the case was linked to a deadly journey in which several Somalis lost their lives while trying to reach Europe through Mayotte Island.

Court Chairman Salaax Ali Mahmoud announced the ruling. Seven people were found guilty, while others were acquitted due to lack of evidence.

The convicted individuals received prison sentences ranging from six months to four years. Two of them were also ordered to pay compensation to the families of the deceased.

The court further directed them to return money taken from migrants who filed complaints.

The case comes amid growing concern over irregular migration in Somalia. Reports have emerged of victims paying up to $10,000 each for the dangerous journey. Some of those involved were elderly.

In a country facing widespread poverty, the case has raised questions about how such networks operate and persuade people to take high risks.
