Somali government forces, backed by local militias, have taken control of Ruunirgood district in the Middle Shabelle region following an early morning offensive against the Al-Shabaab militant group, officials said Monday.

According to the district commissioner, the joint operation targeted the group’s main base in the area, resulting in its capture and the destruction of several militant facilities.

Security officials said a manhunt is underway for Al-Shabaab fighters who fled during the assault. Efforts are ongoing to stabilise the area and prevent any resurgence.

The operation comes as part of the federal government’s renewed military campaign in the Middle Shabelle region aimed at reclaiming areas recently targeted by the group.

Senior government and military officials, including the chief of the Somali National Army, the chairman of the military court, and representatives from the HirShabelle state, are currently overseeing operations on the frontline.

The seizure of Ruunirgood is viewed as a strategic gain for Somali forces and a setback to Al-Shabaab’s influence in the region.
