Somali PM Ccalls for lifting of arms embargo in UNGA speech

In his speech at the UN General Assembly on Sunday, Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre called for the lifting of the 31-year-old arms embargo on Somalia.
He underscored his government’s remarkable progress in various sectors, including security, counterterrorism, financial reform, social development, and anti-corruption efforts, while emphasizing Somalia’s tangible journey towards lasting peace and stability.
Barre highlighted his government’s successes in clearing over 45% of the areas that were previously occupied by Al-Shabaab, mostly in Galmudug and Hirshabelle regional states.
He also emphasized Somalia’s commitment to the full implementation of the security transition plan and taking over full security responsibility once the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) forces depart by the end of December 2024.
Barre reiterated Somalia’s calls for the complete and unconditional removal of the arms embargo, terming it “the longest-lasting, widest, and most comprehensive arms embargo in the world.” He assured the international community that Somalia has the necessary administrative systems to strictly control the possession, use, and storage of firearms.
On development matters, Barre called for the renewal and acceleration of actions to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and said that Somalia is committed to the principle of living in peace with the rest of the world.
Barre’s compelling address at the UN General Assembly marked a pivotal moment in Somalia’s ongoing journey towards a more stable future, as he rallied for the world’s support in ushering in a new era of peace and prosperity for the country.
