Somali President Offers Condolences on the Passing of Prominent Somali Musician Ahmed Naji

In an official statement, President Mohamud paid tribute to Ahmed Naji Saad’s significant contributions to Somali culture, literature, and heritage through his remarkable artistic work. He underscored the enduring impact of Ahmed Naji Saad’s presence within the Somali arts scene and his role in showcasing the richness of Somali culture.
“I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family, relatives, and the Somali people who mourn the loss of Ahmed Naji Saad. He was a revered figure in the Somali community and a symbol of artistic excellence,” stated President Mohamud.
Ahmed Naji Saad, renowned as one of Somalia’s most celebrated musicians, passed away in London on Monday.
In addition to his musical talents, Ahmed Naji was a multifaceted artist who engaged in reading, composing music, and mastering various musical instruments.
Reflecting on his early years, in an interview he gave a while back, Naji talked about his childhood and remarked, “I was born in Shibis District, which was called Bilajo Arab (at the time), in 1939. I completed my school education and Quranic studies in Mogadishu.”
He officially commenced his musical journey in 1954 during a period when patriotic and Arabic songs were prevalent in Somali culture.
Among his notable contributions included composing plays such as “A Poor Man’s Pursuit of Love,” “Secrets and the Journey of Love,” and “The Court of Love.”” Additionally, he created captivating melodies and music for fellow artists.
Ahmed Naji Saad also held the prestigious position of heading the music department within the Council of Culture and Entertainment.
In the face of Somalia’s civil war, Ahmed Naji Saad left the country and lived in Arab countries before eventually migrating to Europe. He spent his final years in England, where he battled a prolonged illness before his passing.
Ahmed Naji Saad’s departure marks the end of an era in Somali music and culture, leaving behind a lasting legacy that will continue to inspire and resonate with generations to come.
