The government and people of Somalia have donated nearly $5 million to earthquake victims in Türkiye.

The donation was handed over to the Turkish Ambassador to Somalia Ibrahim Mete Yagli in a ceremony attended by the Speaker of the Parliament Adan Mohamed Madobe and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre among other senior government officials.

Speaking in the capital Mogadishu on Sunday, Barre thanked the people of Somalia for standing in solidarity with their Turkish brethren.

“I want to let the people of Türkiye know that they have a brother in the Horn of Africa, one who is a fellow Muslim, one who loves them and who is always ready to stand by them,” he said.

In his remarks at the event, Ambassador Yagli thanked the Somali government and people for their support describing the recent earthquakes in Türkiye as “worst disaster Türkiye faced in the history of its republic.”

Approximately 46,000 people died in the magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 quakes that struck several Turkish provinces on February 6.
