Somalia and Libya have signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance cooperation in governance, security, and urban development, according to Somalia’s presidency.

The agreements were signed during Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s visit to Libya, where he met with Libyan leaders, including Presidential Council Chairman Mohamed al-Menfi and Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh.

Discussions also covered the repatriation of Somali nationals held in Libyan prisons. Many Somali migrants are either detained by authorities or fall into the hands of traffickers while attempting to reach Europe.

“This reaffirms the historic ties between Somalia and Libya and their shared commitment to fostering economic growth and sustainable progress,” Somalia’s presidency said in a statement.

Mohamud arrived in Tripoli on Monday for a two-day visit.

The visit marks a renewed effort by both nations to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties, with Somalia emphasizing the need to safeguard its citizens abroad while deepening relations with Libya.
