Somalia on Sunday joined several Muslim-majority nations in celebrating Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

Eid prayers were widely observed across Mogadishu and other cities, with large congregations gathering in open grounds. One of the main venues was the Isbahaysiga Mosque in Mogadishu, where senior government officials joined worshippers for the prayers.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud extended his congratulations to all Muslims and the Somali people, emphasising the significance of unity and compassion on this special occasion.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre performed Eid prayers in No. 50 town, Lower Shabelle region, alongside security forces and local residents. His visit comes amid ongoing military operations against Al-Shabaab, following intensified attacks in the Middle Shabelle and Hiran regions in recent weeks. The prime minister has previously vowed to take the fight to the frontlines and urged his cabinet to prepare for an intensified campaign.

Muslims begin Eid celebrations by attending a prayer service shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon. Dressed in their best clothes, families spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours, exchanging Eid greetings, and sharing festive meals. The occasion is also a time to support the less fortunate, with many receiving food packages to partake in the celebrations.

In Mogadishu, the streets were filled with families and children heading to Eid festivities and entertainment venues. Similar scenes were witnessed in cities including Hargeisa and Kismayo, where people gathered to mark the holiday with joy and enthusiasm.

Eid al-Fitr was celebrated with great fervour across the country, bringing communities together in prayer, charity, and festivity.
