Somalis grieve the killing of a young doctor in a tragic act of clan revenge, in Galkayo, in the central region of Mudug.
Dr. Sakariye Abdi Jama was shot and killed on Saturday evening by an unidentified gunman inside his health center.
This tragic incident is believed to be linked to ongoing inter-clan conflicts in the northern part of Galkayo town.
A CCTV camera recorded the assailant, armed and accompanied by two others, entering the facility and opening fire on Dr. Jama, resulting in his immediate death. Security officials are in pursuit of the perpetrators who fled the scene.
Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, Special Presidential Envoy for Drought Response for the Federal Republic of Somalia, described the killers as “beasts”.
“This is a stark reminder of what humans are capable of when they suffer from a deficit of intellect, humanity, and morality; their actions resemble those of beasts,” he posted on his Facebook page.
Dr. Abdurahman Baadiyow, a renown Somali academician described the murder as “shocking”.
“He was tragically murdered by some of those whom he dedicated his life to saving,” he wrote on X.
Meanwhile, doctors and other healthcare workers in Galkayo town staged a strike in protest, demanding that the perpetrators be brought to justice and urging the government to take decisive action to curb the alarming increase in tribal revenge killings.
Tribal revenge killings are on the rise in the region. The Puntland administration has been criticized for its inability to effectively combat this violence.
The killing of Dr. Jama is a tragedy and a wake-up call for the Puntland administration to take urgent action to address the issue of tribal revenge killings.
