The United States military carried out airstrikes on two vessels transporting advanced conventional weapons believed to be destined for the armed group Al-Shabaab, according to a statement released by the US Africa Command (AFRICOM).

The strikes, which were conducted in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, took place on April 16 within Somalia’s territorial waters. AFRICOM said the weapons posed an imminent threat to Somali forces if they had reached the group.

“Specific details about the units and assets involved will not be released to ensure operational security,” the statement added.

The operation comes amid a rise in attacks by Al-Shabaab against Somali government forces and allied local fighters. The group, which is affiliated with al-Qaeda, continues to acquire weapons despite international sanctions, raising concerns about the sources and routes of its arms supply.

In recent months, Somali forces have lost ground to Al-Shabaab in several areas, particularly in the Hiran and Middle Shabelle regions. They recaptured these territories during the 2022 offensive backed by local militias.
