Authorities in Somalia’s breakaway region of Somaliland apprehended 170 Ethiopian nationals on Wednesday, believed to be victims of human trafficking. This significant development comes amidst ongoing challenges in the fight against human trafficking in the Horn of Africa.

The Coast Guard intercepted the Ethiopians in the Waqadariya area of the eastern Sanaag region. The migrants, attempting to reach Yemen via an irregular route, were detained on a large vessel. Ethiopian officials have not yet commented on the incident.

Driven by a hope for better economic opportunities, many Ethiopians embark on perilous journeys across borders. Somalia itself hosts thousands of Ethiopians seeking a better life.

Ethiopia’s current internal conflicts in Oromia and Amhara, along with food insecurity, are believed to be contributing factors to this migration.

Meanwhile, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed faces criticism for prioritizing aggressive foreign policy initiatives, including his controversial January agreement with Somaliland for a military base, over addressing pressing domestic issues such as pervasive poverty. This decision has exacerbated tensions with Somalia, further complicating regional relations.
