Somali federal government forces, together with local militia, have cleared several areas in the Middle Shabelle region used by Al-Shabaab fighters, according to state media.
The cleared areas, located along the Shabelle River, include Kiliga Mohamed Diirshe, Raas Qaboobe, Jameeco, Shanloow, Dhagaxoow, Yaaqle, Farbarako, and Damileey.
The operation, which took place on Tuesday, also led to the capture and death of several Al-Shabaab militants, Somali National Television (SNTV) reported.
Local sources noted that the situation remains volatile, with operations still ongoing in the area.
Despite initial progress in President Hassan Mohamud’s offensive since his reelection in 2022, operations against Al-Shabaab have stalled in recent months, with the group continuing to control large territories in southern and central Somalia.
