Clashes erupt between South West State forces and clan militia near Bardaale

Heavy fighting broke out on Monday morning on the outskirts of Bardaale town in Somalia’s Bay region, as South West State forces clashed with local clan militia, according to residents and local sources.
The clashes began when militia fighters reportedly launched an attack on South West State troops stationed near the town. Both sides exchanged heavy fire, with gunshots heard across Bardaale, sparking panic among residents, according to local media reports.
The number of casualties remains unconfirmed as the fighting was still ongoing at the time of reporting. The militia group, which had earlier been pushed out of the area, is reportedly attempting to retake control.
Residents said the fighters had been mobilising near the town over recent days, leading to Monday’s assault. Key supply routes into Bardaale have also been blocked, disrupting the movement of goods and civilians.
The exact cause of the fighting and the roots of the dispute remain unclear.
The clashes come amid growing insecurity across South West State. Last week, Somali government forces and South West State troops repelled an Al-Shabaab attack between Baidoa and Daynuunay. According to local sources, at least eight Al-Shabaab fighters were killed in the confrontation, while South West State forces also suffered losses, including the deaths of several senior officers.
