Fresh clashes broke out Wednesday in Aboorey, a town in Somalia’s Hiiraan region, between Al-Shabaab fighters and local militia backed by federal troops.

Residents said the fighting began early in the day. Both sides exchanged heavy gunfire for several hours. Casualties were reported, but exact numbers remain unclear.

Al-Shabaab recently seized control of Aboorey following more than two weeks of intense battles. Government forces had previously claimed control but failed to maintain their hold on the area.

The latest offensive, according to officials, is aimed at retaking the town and driving Al-Shabaab from strategic positions.

Aboorey has seen repeated fighting in recent months. The group continues to resist despite ongoing military operations.

In other parts of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle, federal and local forces are also conducting operations. Authorities say the campaign is intended to halt Al-Shabaab’s growing attacks.
